* “He who transplants sustains” 也是康州的州訓，它反映了當初北美的殖民者的信念：上帝(He) ，把他們從英格蘭遷移(transplant) 到北美大陸，會繼續幫助他們，供給(sustain) 他們。用一個長句子表達這句話，可以是：“God, who transplants us, sustain us.” Or “God, who the colonists believed had Transplanted them from England to the New World, where he continued to sustain them.”

* 美國是以基督教立國的國家，很多學校的校訓都跟基督教的信仰有關，或是摘自聖經中的某段內容。 Emory University也不例外。

這句校訓是摘自於舊約聖經的箴言第十八章15節。 全句是 “聰明人的心得知識．智慧人的耳求知識” 英文是“The heart of the prudent getteth knowledge; and the ear of the wise seeketh knowledge. ” (King James version) 。這句話是1890年被Emory University引為 校訓。

這句校訓是摘自於新約聖經的腓利比書第四章8節。 全句是“Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things”

中文意思是：“我還有未盡的話．凡是真實的、可敬的、公義的、清潔的、可愛的、有美名的．若有甚麼德行、若有甚麼稱讚、這些事你們都要思念。” 腓 利 比 書是在公元一世紀，在羅馬帝國殖民統治時期，聖使徒保羅寫給腓利比教會基督徒的勉勵。

牛津大學因歷史悠久，許多古老樓舍裡面設施陳舊，且常有停電現象。所以這一銘文也成了牛津大學師生在停電時嘲諷校方或自嘲時常用的噱頭：“上帝是我們的光，所以我們不用電的”^_^
